VBHA History

Public housing was established by the U.S. Housing Act of 1937. The purpose of the act was to provide homes for those of low and moderate income The Housing Authority is located in the City of Van Buren, Arkansas (Van Buren Housing Authority or VBHA) was organized on May 18th, 1960, pursuant to the Housing Authority Act of Arkansas. The Van Buren Housing Authority further promotes resources for self sustainability.

Current Operation

VBHA currently owns and manages 198 units of public housing (family and designated elderly) in Van Buren, Arkansas. Van Buren Housing Authority also manages 40 units of public housing in Ozark, Arkansas.

Van Buren Housing Authority is recognized as a High Performer

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) developed a rating system to measure the performance of housing authorities across the country. Public Housing Assessment System (PHAS), measures financial condition, physical condition, management operations, and customer satisfaction in their determining awards. The Van Buren Housing Authority is consistently rated “High Performer”, the highest designation awarded by HUD.


Our Mission

Our goal is to provide a drug free, safe, clean housing for eligible families. The Van Buren Housing Authority also promotes and provides opportunities to promote self-sufficiency and economic independence for our residents.

In order to achieve this mission we will:

  • Recognize residents as our ultimate customer
  • Improve Van Buren Housing Authority (VBHA) management and service delivery efforts through effective and efficient management of VBHA staff
  • Seek problem-solving partnerships with residents, community, and government leadership, planning and development
  • Apply Van Buren Housing Authority resources to the effective and efficient management and operation of public housing programs, taking into account changes in Federal funding

Our philosophy is simple: Invest back into the community and to help others grow.

  • Instrumental in establishing Tree City USA Board for Van Buren
  • Member of Chamber of Commerce
  • Representation on Main Street Van Buren, Women's League of Van Buren, Van Buren School District Education Foundation, Leadership Crawford County, River Valley Museum, Sertoma Club, Rotary Club
  • Founded non-profit 501(c)3 corporation to aid other non-profits in obtaining grant monies
  • On-site substation for Van Buren Police Department
